Mayari Print

I've always loved the tales of Mayari, the Tagalog goddess of night. However, for the longest time, I've avoided working on her since there are so many talented Filipino artists who've depicted her in their own unique way. But lately, I couldn’t help but to illustrate her out of my personal enjoyment.  I've been going through some kind of spiritual awakenting lately. I’m re-learning to love myself, appreciate the goodness from others, and not allowing negative energy get the best of me. Listening to music, nightly prayers, lowering down the volume of the news, participating in new activities/hobbies, focusing in on my kids, and of course the arts, have all played a huge part in this change.

Mayari is the ancient Philippine goddess of the Moon. She was known to have ruled the night and admired for her beauty and strength. She is also known as a warrior goddess as she represented the dimmer phases of the moon. Many of our Filipino ancestors sought to her for guidance since she represented strength, resilience, and wisdom gained through hardship.

After the death of her father, Bathala, a well-known myth of a tumultuous conflict between Mayari and her brother, Apolaki, ensued. Both fought hard for whom would rule the world. However, the fight resulted in Mayari losing her one eye, leading to a compromise where she'd rule the night while Apolaki ruled the day.
