The Modern Pilipina Print
At some point, most young Filipina Americans struggle to solidify their identity. As a 1st generation Fil-Am, I know how difficult that can be. I created this Modern Filipina in hopes to invite our young ladies to embrace and celebrate their roots. This figure represents her past and her present. She sits upon a Bilibid chair, a piece of furniture that originated in the Philippines during the years of US colonization. The tribal tattoos that decorate her body mean she’s acknowledged the existence of her pre-colonial ancestors. She boldly sports the bolero and vintage hand-carved wooden sandals with style and confidence as her great-grandmother did when she was her age.
If you know of a young lady who’s starting her journey as a curious, open-minded Filipina, consider giving this piece as a gift. It’ll only bring positive self-awareness.
