The Matriarch Print

$20.00

I was inspired by my late Lola Nene, whom I’ve always seen as the matriarch of my father’s side of the family. From as early as I can remember, she was a strong, outspoken, and extraordinary woman. My Lolo served in the US Navy during, I believe, the 1950s and 60s, and yet Lola raised five children on her own while remaining deeply involved and well-known in her community. She was truly remarkable.

I may not consider myself as fearless or resilient as my Lola, but I feel her presence guiding me, especially when I face the challenges and frustrations of being a single mother. In those moments, I sense her comfort, her strength, and her wisdom.

Interestingly, matriarchy has long been a part of Philippine society. Even before Spanish colonization, women were regarded as equals to men—not only as bearers of children but also as leaders, warriors, and property owners. Women could become religious leaders, or Babaylan, and hold influential roles in their communities. This cultural history makes me feel even more connected to my Lola’s legacy, and to the enduring strength of Filipino women.
