Dalikamata Print
In Visayan mythology, Dalikamata was a revered goddess known for her beauty and her thousand eyes scattered across her body. Compassionate toward humans, she wept for their misfortunes and wrongdoings. Legend says her tears became the morning dew, which the ancient Babaylans collected as a remedy for eye ailments.
Feared for her ability to see the past, present, and future, Dalikamata used winged creatures—such as owls and hawks—for their keen vision, and butterflies and moths to observe the deeds of humans. These insects’ distinctive eye-like wing patterns are said to reflect her watchful presence.
When the Spaniards colonized the Philippines, Dalikamata was replaced by St. Lucia, the Roman Catholic patroness against eye diseases, illustrating the cultural and religious shifts that occurred during colonization.
