Palengke Print

When I was a little girl, I loved going to the palengke with my Lola or Mom. Every trip felt like an adventure—a bustling mix of a farmer’s market and organized chaos. The market was loud, crowded, and filled with smells you couldn’t find anywhere else.

The last time I visited, in 2000, I learned that the palengke my Lola used to frequent had been destroyed by a fire. In its place, a new and larger market was built, called Walter*Mart (not to be confused with WalMart), carrying on the tradition in a modern setting.
